How To Build A Simple Model Boat

Paper 95/2008

Cheeky Vampire: Chibi Vampire (2003)

Dt. Title: Cheeky Vampire
title: Karin (Japanese)

My Rating:

author (Source: Wiki )

Cheeky Vampire (...) is a manga artist, born on March 3, 1973, best known for being the author of the manga Chibi Vampire.

Inhalt (Klappentext, Tokyopop)
Karin is a cute little girl who also happens to be a vampire... with a twist. Once a month, she experiences intense bleeding from her nose - we're talking gushers! In other words, she's a vamp with blood to spare, so rather than stealing blood from humans she actually gives her blood to them. If done right, this can be an extremely positive experience that benefits the „victim“ as much as the vamp. The problem is that Karin never seems to do things right.

Meinung
The idea behind the manga is indeed quite original, a vampire who gives his 'victims' blood, rather than to take it. Otherwise Karin is not exactly the typical vampire, on the contrary, it is the black sheep of the family. During daylight it is not in the least harm, they can see in the dark just as a normal person, so they must also pay the electric bill itself.
it is funny, yes, but the story is still pretty rough sometimes. I was personally a lot of unclear and very much insight into the characters get too unfortunately. The drawing style is indeed quite sweet, but too little attention concern. Who likes Manga, and will even read a not so serious vampire story that is true with Chibi Vampire , otherwise you have to have read it does not really.

Patricia Briggs: Blood Bound (2007)

Dt. Title: Curse of the Blood

My Rating:

Patricia Briggs (born 1965) is an award-winning fantasy author known for her lifelike characters and humorous dialogue. She was born in Butte, Montana, and lived in various cities in the Pacific Northwest before returning to her home town.

.

Inhalt (Klappentext, Orbit)
Like most people who own their own business, I work long hours that start early in the morning. So when someone calls me in the middle of the night, they'd better be dying ...

Mechanic Mercy Thompson is woken at 3am by a vampire calling in a favour. He has to deliver a message to a fellow undead and needs a witness that won't be noticed - and Mercy's shapeshifting abilities make her the perfect candidate.

But the assignment turns into a bloodbath and Mercy attracts the attention of not just a powerful vampire, but the even more powerful demon possessing him. She can count on the supernatural community for protection - and alpha werewolf Adam would like her to rely on him in other ways too - but when it comes to being proactive, she's on her own.

opinion
In Blood Bound Mercy Thompson is a vampire, whose car (in Scooby Doo design), they frequently repaired to support asked. You will also have the werewolves and other characters from Moon Called and again, but the focus is clearly on the blood suckers. Mercy, and thus we get glimpses into the ordered structure of the Vampires, and learn more about the band indicated in the previous powers of shape-shifter, the Mercy to make the vampires a feared and hated that respondent.

Was it because of the vampires or the fact that I've finally used to the notation, at least I could Blood Bound enjoy more than Moon Called . A few German carvers were still always there, but for gabs a lot of tension and some interesting new characters.

Inhalt (Klappentext, Orbit)
I didn't realize he was a werewolf at first.
My nose isn't at its best when surrounded by axle grease and burnt oil ...

Mercedes Thompson runs a garage in the Tri-Cities. She's a mechanic, and a damn good one, who spends her spare time karate training and tinkering with a VW bus that happens to belong to a vampire. Her next-door neighbour is an alpha werewolf - literally, the leader of the pack. And Mercy herself is a shapeshifter, sister to coyotes. As such, she's tolerated by the 'wolves but definitely down the pecking order. As long as she keeps her eyes down and remembers her place, the pack will leave her in peace.

Hardly a normal situation, but then, Mercy Thompson is not exactly normal herself...and her connection to the world of things that go bump in the night is about to get her into a whole lot of trouble.

Meinung
In Moon Called it goes, as the title suggests, primarily about werewolves, but other characters such as vampires and witches are introduced (and then in subsequent volumes closer to them to respond). The book reads almost by itself, just a fun fantasy novel as they are currently thrown in heaps on the market. Surprising twists and great new features you may expect, of course, although the main character at first seemed quite promising. Mercy is a form-walker, which is in a coyote can change. This gives it indeed had a nose, but not super powers. Somehow awakened the way in which Mercy was shown, but the image of a housewife who finally wants "more", and decides to write a fantasy novel, where they packed all their frustration in the heroine. Auto mechanic, tough self-confident, can say nothing of men, and yet it is all somehow not quite convincing.

What was particularly annoying still is the fact Mercy's former boss that originally comes from German-speaking and German einwirft now and expressions. As Briggs has studied German, I understand not, however, why these German phrases and words are sometimes so flawed.

Overall, the whole thing was not quite mature, but I do see potential.

Tom Holland: The Vampyre. The Secret History of Lord Byron (1995)

Dt. Title: The vampire

My Rating:

Autor (Quelle: Wiki )
Tom Holland (born 1968) is an acclaimed British author. He has written many books, both fiction and non-fiction, on many subjects from vampires to history.

Holland was born near Oxford and brought up in Salisbury, England. He obtained a double first in English and Latin at Queens' College, Cambridge, and afterwards studied shortly for a PhD at Oxford, taking Lord Byron as his subject, before interrupting the post graduate studies and moving to London.

He has adapted Herodotus, Homer, Thucydides and Virgil for BBC Radio 4. His novels (...) mostly have a supernatural and horror element as well as being set in the past. He is also the author of two highly praised works of history (...).

He lives in London with his wife and two children.

Novels: Attis (1995), The Vampyre: Being the True Pilgrimage of George Gordon, Sixth Lord Byron (1995), Deliver Us from Evil (1997), The Sleeper in the Sands (1998), The Bonehunter (2001)

Short Fiction : The Poison in the Blood (2006)

Non-fiction: Rubicon: The Triumph and Tragedy of the Roman Republic (2003), Persian Fire: The First World Empire and the Battle for the West (2005)

Inhalt (Klappentext, Abacus)
What was the deadly secret that haunted the writings of Lord Byron, the most brilliant and notorious of romantic poets? Tom Holland, in this dazzlingly crafted blend of fact and fiction, offers a truly terrifying answer. Impeccably researched, vividly imagined, The Vampyre is a gothic fiction at its most atmospheric, allusive and thought-provoking. As Byron himself pointed out: truth is stranger than fiction.

opinion
Finally, once again an exciting vampire novel, with no dripping and kitsch manages. Unfortunately, I am familiar with Byron from not at all in so I can not say whether the vampire story really fits in his life, or whether it is told so well that it theoretically could really have been.

Without at least a minimum of background knowledge to Byron to have is a well-defined lost a part of the appeal of this book, the historical portion of the book becomes secondary to the fiction predominates. The vampire story itself is told very exciting and compelling, with interesting characters, beautiful language, and many details. Between each chapter excerpts from texts of Byron are inserted, the fit of Holland's concept.

The end is me personally a bit too abruptly, but otherwise, the novel is very consistent and all lovers of vampire literature (and Byron?) Is recommended without reservation.

Roald Dahl: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (1964)

Dt. Title: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

My Rating:

Author (Source: Wiki )
Roald Dahl (13 September 1916-23 November 1990) was a British novelist, short story writer and screenwriter, born in Wales of Norwegian parents, who rose to prominence in the 1940s with works for both children and adults, and became one of the world's bestselling authors.
His most popular books include The Twits, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, Matilda, The Witches and The BFG.

(...) For a brief, relatively unsuccessful period in the 1960s, Dahl wrote screenplays. Two of his screenplays – the James Bond film You Only Live Twice and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang – were adaptations of novels by Ian Fleming. Dahl also wrote an initial draft adapting his own novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory , which was heavily rewritten by David Seltzer, and produced as the film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971). Dahl later disowned the film.

(...) Many of his children's books are illustrated by Quentin Blake.

Inhalt (Klappentext, Puffin)
Charlie Bucket loves chocolate. And Mr Willy Wonka, the most wondrous inventor in the world, is opening the gates of his amazing chocolate factory to five lucky children. It's the prize of a lifetime! Gibstoppers, wriggle sweets and a river of melted chocolate delight await – Charlie needs just one Golden Ticket and these delicious treats could all be his.

opinion
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is probably the most out of the ( new) film adaptation of the book (2005), known to Johnny Depp in the role of Willy Wonka. Although the film is based closely on the literary work, the book was very predictable but not boring. Roald Dahl's story sparkles with creativity and charm, the characters are carefully designed so that one really with the poor family of the little sympathy for Charlie, and mitfiebert later in search of the golden ticket with Charlie. The bizarre Willy Wonka and his chocolate creations, the factory and the mysterious Oompa-Loompas, the wonderfully exaggerated children's Veruca Salt, Augustus Gloop, Violet Beauregarde and Mike Teavee and their "experiences" in the factory, to the simple but very apt illustrations - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a wonderfully weird and funny book that is not recommended for children only.

The world of the undead is a vast one, with many stories remaining to be told. In Bloodsucker Tales, Steve Niles continues the saga of 30 Days of Night with the bloody and terrifying story "Dead Billy Dead," illustrated by talented newcomer Kody Chamberlain. Matt Fraction (Last of the Independents) joins in with "Juarez," introducing Lex Nova, former private detective and free-range madman, illustrated by Ben Templesmith.

Meinung
Dieser Band beeinhaltet zwei Geschichten, both independently and regardless of the recent 30 Days of Night are plot. Here is one of the two 30 Days of Night masterminds thrown together with a "new". The first story, written by Steve Niles and drawn by a Kody Chamberlain (which is "new", what the illustration relates to something boring, too much I've grown accustomed to Temple Smith unmistakable style. The second story is about a new writer, Matt Fraction and illustrated by Templesmith. Here is the story a bit chaotic and confused and is reminiscent of a Robert Rodriguez film, the images ... well, I must say I really ask for? In the match Niles (without Temple Smith) vs. Temple Smith (without Niles) clearly wins Temple Smith. Although I have promised the two newcomers not necessarily completely, it is still a great idea to give other artists the opportunity to 30 Days of Night mitzumischen universe.

30 Days of Night was one of the undisputed success stories of modern comics, spawning a bestselling trade paperback, a major motion picture deal, and the attention of thousands of fans longing for an innovative tale of terror. Now the same creative team revisits Barrow, Alaska, the town where it all began, as the long night creeps once more over the tundra. Some things may have changed, but the horror remains...

Meinung
return in the third volume of the 30 Days of Night series we return to where it all began: Return to Barrow so. Of course, the same reading of the title, the question of what it has some to tell. Do we get the story of the successful debut of the series only once warmed up, or did Niles to tell something new? I did not find much innovative and I can now, after a week not even really remember the content. About as much blah not even a consolation Templesmith's great illustrations.

This story follows Stella Olemaun's efforts to warn the world about the threat the vampires pose - the vampires who overran Barrow, Alaska, killing her husband and town most of the. With an exclusive introduction by screenwriter Eric Red (The Hitcher, Near Dark), the flat-out terror of Dark Days will reaffirm the dominance of Niles and Templesmith over the realm of illustrated horror fiction.

Meinung
Dark Days ist die Fortsetzung von 30 Days of Night plays and for some time after the massacre in Barrow. Place Olemaun, the wife of that sheriff who sacrificed his life for Barrow, has written a book about people to open the eyes of the vampires. Ben Templesmith's style is awesome, as well as in the previous comic, the story is only partly a bit too corny and predictable. From Dark Days, therefore, could not really meet my expectations.

Ann Brashares: The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (2001)

Dt. Title: A for 4

My Rating:

author ( Source: Wiki )
Ann Brashares (born 1967) is an American writer of young adult fiction. She is best known as the author of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series of books. (...) "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" (...) became an international best seller that was followed with three more titles in the "Pants" series, the last of which, Forever in Blue, was released in January, 2007. The first book in the series was made into a film in 2005, and a second film based on the other three series titles is planned for release in August, 2008. Brashares's first adult novel, The Last Summer (of You and Me) was released in 2007. She lives in New York with her artist husband, Jacob Collins, and children Nathaniel, Samuel, and Susannah.

Inhalt (Klappentext, Delacorte Press)
Four verry different friends. One pair of magical pants. And a summer apart ...

We, the Sisterhood, hereby instate the following rules to govern the use of the Traveling Pants:

1. You must never wash the Pants.

2. You must never double-cuff the Pants. It's tacky. There will never be a time when this will not be tacky.

3. You must never say the word „phat“ while wearing the Pants. You must also never think „I am fat“ while wearing the Pants.

4. You must never let a boy take off the Pants (although you may take them off yourself in his presence)

5. You must not pick your nose while wearing the Pants. You may, however, scratch casually at your nostril while really kind of picking.

6. Upon our reunion, you must follow the proper procedures for documenting your time in the Pants.

7. You must write to your Sisters throughout the summer, no matter how much fun you are having without them.

8. You must pass the Pants along to your Sisters according to the specifications set down by the Sisterhood. Failure to comply will result in a severe spanking upon our reunion

9. You must not wear the pants belt with a tucked-in shirt and a. See rule # 2

10th Remember: Pants = love. Love your pals. Love yourself.

opinion
As for this book, I am a bit ambivalent. On the one hand, it reads quite fluently, and the protagonists, thus the 4 ladies are also (almost?) all pretty friendly - mainly because they are so different - but a bit more I would have been expected.

Maybe it's because I've heard so many good things about it ... or maybe I'm just too grown up to me, the story really interested, at least it is a youth book.

The book told by a framing story connected, 4 different stories, and although the experiences of four girls during the summer. Bridget is on a soccer camp, Lena's in Greece with her grandparents, Carmen spends the summer with her father and Tibby stays home and works at the supermarket.
Sometimes the stories were quite cute, but just so typical teen stuff. Girl meets boy, girl falls in love with boys, but too shy, or other circumstances to the contrary, blah.
Only Tibby's story has me really interested, she has more of a teenager unusual summer spent.

a good idea were the items between each of the chapters as you read will be so philosophical things like, " Sometimes you're the windshield, sometimes you ' re the bug (Mark Knopfler) "or" You will make all kinds of mistakes: but as long as you are generous and true and so fierce you can not hurt the world or even seriously distress her. (Winston Churchill) "

Maybe I'll give the Mädls again a chance and read the second volume in the series ... But I'm a bit disappointed.

Jim Butcher Death Masks (Book Five of the Dresden Files) (2003)

Dt. Title: not yet translated

My Rating:

About the author Jim Butcher
was born 1971 in Missouri, and began, inspired by the novels of Tolkien and Lewis to write early fantasy, where he managed not to publish the books. Only with Stormfront, the first book about the magician and investigator Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden, which is written in 1996, and was published in 2000, he achieved his breakthrough. The Dresden Files with January 2008, include 10 novels and is a great success. The audiobooks are by actor James Marsters (aka Spike from the TV series Buffy ) spoken, 2007, the TV series was launched was (but apparently after only 12 episodes set), and an adaptation as a graphic novel is already being planned.

novels of the Dresden Files: Storm Front (2000), Fool Moon (2001), Grave Peril (2001), Summer Knight (2002), Death Masks (2003), Blood Rites (2004), Dead Beat (2005), Proven Guilty (2006), White Night (2007), Small Favor (2008);

content (Klappentext, Orbit)
Harry Dresden, Chicago's only practising professional wizard, should be happy that business is pretty good for a change. But now he's getting more than he bargained for: a duel with the Red Court of Vampires' champion, who must kill Harry to end the war between vampires and wizards ... professional hit men using Harry for target practice ... the missing Shroud of Turin ... a handless and headless corpse that the Chicago police need identified ...

Not to mention the return of Harry's ex-girlfriend Susan, who's still struggeling with her semi-vampiric nature. And who seems to have a new man in her life.

Some days, it just doesn't pay to get out of bed. No matter how much you're charging.

opinion
Again a rapid case of Dresden costs almost upside down. As if vampires and other dark figures were not bad enough, this time it is only really to be sensual. do In search of the Turin cloth grave (supposedly the grave cloth of Jesus), it gets killed with so-called Dresden (angels). The calls of course, the Crusaders, in Volume 3 ( Grave Peril ) occurred already on the scene. The question is whether they support Harry, or whether they should stop him, because if Harry is in the search interferes and gets into the hands of favor, they could abuse it for their sinister purposes.

compared to the squabbles with the most vicious demons - such as the Medusa look, just take the snakes with tentacles made of metal, with blades at the end - is the duel with the vampire Champion relatively unspectacular, which was a bit of a shame. Of promising the return of Susan a pretty ... interesting;) ... Scene and is characterized by the absence of excessive cosiness and romance Geschnulze from (I suspected terrible, after all, have both 1 year not seen). All in all another exciting novel that is nothing for the faint of heart. So completely, he goes to the previous but not approach.
